It’s a well-known truism that we live within the realms of our own perceptions and understandings. Where else, after all, could we live? But it’s also true that the diversity of the world, and certainly the diversity of people living in as multicultural environment as we do, means that we have ready access to people whose perceptions and understandings may be quite different to our own. And we are, further, in an environment where we often have little choice but to push ourselves, and extend our own worlds of experience. It’s not easy, but in most cases we grow as a result, and it’s a privilege to live in a time and place with such opportunities.
As far as school goes, these opportunities can arise anywhere. I am hearing great things about the recent grade 9 expeditions; many students were clearly pushed hard and responded magnificently. They were also forced to spend time with strangers, from other classes, schools and cultures – not easy at the best of times, but especially when tired and vulnerable. Grade 11 are facing a similar, even more challenging time with Project Week later this term; and of course grades 10 and 12 face their own, narrower, but important challenges with their exams.
In all cases, we need to remind students that being out of your comfort zone is (by definition) an uncomfortable experience, but that the only alternative is to live an entirely comfortable life, unchallenged and probably a bit bored. We may need to support students through the difficult times, so they can see the magic. It will happen.
have a great week
