Sudden Loss

It has been a rather quiet and sombre week, after the sudden passing of one of our students last weekend. For many students and staff, even those who did not know him, there have been echoes and reverberations, and tears at odd moments. Such is the nature of shock, and of grief.

I am struck by what we re-learn from these moments; the obvious point is that life is precious and we will all be richer if we can come to appreciate it in everyone, everyday. The shock this week will be temporary, but perhaps it may be wise not to be in a hurry to get through it. Feeling the pain of loss without rushing to leave it, and sitting with this reminder of transience and fragility allows us to become literate in the language of grief; which itself might deepen our capacities for love and joy.
